Liposuction is also referred to as Lipoplasty. Suction Lipectomy.
Most of us know how frustrating those exercise resistant fat cells on the stomach, thighs, hips and arms can be. For those who are healthy, who exercise regularly, but just can’t seem to get rid of that extra fat, liposuction is a viable cosmetic surgery option.
Liposuction improves the appearance of body areas that have concentrated amounts of visible fat. Through a vacuum-like process, the fat is removed, creating a smoother, more attractive body contour and better self image.
Various liposuction methods include the standard tumescent technique, ultrasound-assisted (aka Ultrasonic Liposuction), and the most recent variations of liposuction including Liposelection and SmartLipo.
With all the varieties of lipo available out there, not to mention all of the non-surgical cellulite removal treatments (Mesotherapy, VelaSmooth, and Endermologie to name a few), it’s hard to know where to begin.
That’s where a consultation with, Dr. Alexander Sinclair MD, a certified liposuction surgeon comes into play. Every surgeon has his or her own favorite technique based on the results they’ve had with their patients, but most importantly, based on each patients unique case. Dr. Alexander Sinclair, will explain his technique clearly and thoroughly enough to give you all the information you need to feel confident in your decision.
Surgical Lipo Techniques:
LipoSelection®-This form of lipo is exclusive to the Vaser System which uses ultrasonic energy to dissolve fat cells for a speedier recovery period with less discomfort. Through ultrasonic energy, LipoSelection leaves surrounding tissue, nerves and blood vessels virtually intact.
Ultrasonic Liposuction - While theoretically the same technique as LipoSelection, ultrasound-assisted liposuction doesn’t utilize the Vaser System. Fat cells are broken down and liquefied through ultrasonic energy (sound waves) that are emitted at the top of the canula.
SmartLipo™-Involves laser-assisted fat removal through a small canula with an Nd:Yag laser placed inside. SmartLipo is used to firm up localized areas of fat, while also tightening the skin. Popular places for SmartLipo include the chin, waist, upper arms, inner/outer thighs. It can also be performed without general anesthesia.
Tumescent Lipo-The oldest version of liposuction being utilized today, tumescent lipo is by no means obsolete. Many doctors still refer to it as the tried and true method of liposuction and their preference when it comes to treating the majority of their patients.
Better technology has allowed for this standard suction technique to deliver proven results with little downtime, scarring or complications; however, your results will depend on the skill and precision of your surgeon.
Power-Assisted Lipo (PAL)-In a nutshell, the power-assisted liposuction technique requires less force on the part of the surgeon to remove unwanted fat cells.
Because the liposuction cannula is powered, it moves in a very rapid back and forth motion that allows for ease of movement.
Also, PAL is not ultrasonic and therefore, no heat is generated that can harm surrounding tissues.
In effect, this method reshapes the body and creates more flattering contours.
Time Required for Liposuction:
It can take just an hour up to several to perform liposuction surgery. Time requirements vary quite a bit, depending on the size of the area being treated, the amount of fat being removed, and the technique being used.
Is Liposuction an In Patient or Out Patient Procedure?
Outpatient.
What are the Side Effects of Liposuction?
Liposuction side effects may include temporary swelling, bruising, discomfort, numbness, and limited mobility.
How Long do Liposuction results last?
Liposuction results are considered permanent, but do rely on the behavior of the patient. Healthy eating and a smart fitness plan need to be adhered to for liposuction results to last.
What is the recovery time for Liposuction?
Day 1- From the day of your surgery until about a month afterwards, you will be instructed to wear a compression garment around the treated areas to assist with reduction of swelling.
Day 7-14- You will most likely feel comfortable returning to work about 1-2 weeks into the liposuction recovery period.
Day 14-2 Months- After liposuction, recovery from swelling and bruising usually takes about 2-4 weeks.
2-3 Months- Your final shape will develop over the 2-3 months following your liposuction surgery.
Will my insurance company cover Liposuction?
Because of the cosmetic nature of liposuction, insurance is usually not involved.
Is there much discomfort for Liposuction?
After liposuction, discomfort and moderate pain will be felt, which can be controlled with doctor-prescribed pain medication.
Most patients report feeling stiff and sore, like they do after a really intensive workout, or if they haven’t exercised in a while.
After taking any prescribed pain medication for the specified period of time, patients often take over-the-counter pain relievers to eliminate any lingering discomfort and reduce swelling.
What happens during liposuction?
Step 1 – Anesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedures. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia.
Dr. Alexander Sinclair, will recommend the best choice for you.
Step 2 – The incision
Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions.
First, sterile liquid solution is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma.
Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through these incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion.
The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.
Problem areas that can be addressed with liposuction:

Step 3 – See the results
Your improved body contour will be apparent when the swelling and fluid retention commonly experienced following liposuction subside.
With continued practices of healthy diet and fitness, the loss of excess fatty tissue should be permanently maintained.
However, substantial weight gain can alter an otherwise permanent result.
