But for women who are opposed to implants, a new option is gaining ground: fat grafting.Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Dan Delveccio has been doing traditional breast augmentations for years and added fat grafting in 2006. He said a fat-grafted breast is as natural a breast as you can get.”Fat grafting is simply taking fat out of one part of the body with liposuction and like seeds, implanting them into other parts of the body,” he said. One of his recent patients is Lauren, a 26-year-old economics graduate student at Harvard University. She had lost a lot of weight in recent years, but there were some areas that she felt diet and exercise couldn’t touch. Lauren was concerned about putting something foreign in her body and knew that implants, whether saline or silicone, would have to be replaced periodically

(via Instapaper)

Sent from iMan’s iPad

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Plastic Surgery Does ‘Turn Back the Clock’ – Bloomberg

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

I was reading this article yesterday morning and I wanted to share something that caught my attention about how much money American's spend in 2010 on Plastic Surgery.. "A face lift can make a person look seven years younger, according to a study that asked volunteers to guess the ages of patients who had cosmetic [...]

I was reading this article yesterday morning and I wanted to share something that caught my attention about how much money American's spend in 2010 on Plastic Surgery..

"A face lift can make a person look seven years younger, according to a study that asked volunteers to guess the ages of patients who had cosmetic surgery.

Shown photos of 60 people who had the procedures, the volunteers, composed of first-year medical students, estimated the patients to be an average of 8.9 years younger than their actual age, according to the study published online today in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. Before surgery, the medical students perceived the patients to be 1.7 years younger, yielding an age difference of 7.2 years after plastic surgery.

Americans spent almost $10.7 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2010"

This article came from http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-20/plastic-surgery-really-does-turn-back-the-clock-study-finds.html

Our thoughts, beliefs and perception create the world around us. Perhaps you have heard it said: "perception is reality". How disappointing is it when you feel good and a friend asks "is everything all right, you look so tired and stressed". Have you seen a photograph of yourself and thought "how did this happen to me, I look so old". My patients often ask "how far back will a facelift turn the hands of the clock". I answered this question by showing them before and after images of surgery i have done. A new study was recently released, that quantified just how much younger patients looked after facial rejuvenation. Medical students were shown pictures of patients that had under cosmetic surgery. On average the medical students estimated that the patients were 8.4 years younger than there actual age after facial plastic surgery. That is a powerful change. So let me ask you, if the world sees you as 8.4 years younger than you really are, may you subtract 8.4 years from your age when someone asks "how old are you?" As the world perceives us to be younger do we then act younger, setting up a cycle so that we look younger yet. No matter how you feel about aging or plastic surgery, remember a youthful attitude will help us feel young

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

What 165k People Have In Common With A Kardashian Salad

podcast

buttock augmentation

buttock lift

Fat Grafting

fat transfer

kim kardashian

In this second episode of Cosmetic Counselor Dr. Sinclair and Iman discuss the Grand Canyon Size Gap that exists between people interested in Buttock Augmentation and those that actually follow through with the procedure. Shortall worked seven days a week to pay for the $3,600 procedure, which was intended to take a few hours.
“Approximately 22 incisions [were made], which is a significant amount, in terms of a relatively, an otherwise relatively minor cosmetic procedure,” the family attorney, Michael Freedland, said. “What we do know is that a 38-year-old, otherwise healthy woman, shouldn’t go in for a minor cosmetic procedure, and die.”
At some point during Shortall’s procedure, things started to go wrong. The facility decided that she needed to be transported to Cleveland Clinic, where she was eventually pronounced dead.

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Article: You can’t keep breast implants for life, FDA says – Should I? Denise, 26, investment banking

AN author and economist called Catherine Hakim has written widely on an idea called erotic capital. It says that you do better at work and in your life if you are more beautiful. She has a book on this theme to be released soon.

So your question, which initially causes something of a raised eyebrow, is also fair.

But – assuming there is something to Hakim’s main theme – I would first of all question the degree to which erotic capital should be defined by breast size. Big breasts are considered a bonus by some, yes. By others, less so. Regardless, their size is beside the point: what you should be doing in a professional environment is to look as sharp as possible. Wear good clothes, nice shoes, try to be slim and fit.

But being prepared to take to the knife for career advancement seems to me to be a grave skewing of priorities. Being attractive can help your career, perhaps. But on the list of other things that can help your career, it should be ranked fairly low. Intelligence, ambition, hard work, good ethics. Focus on these to get ahead in your career. And attractiveness – particularly breast-size – is a massive double-edged sword. It’s asking for sexual attention to get ahead: something in the same sphere as giving sexual favours to the boss for a promotion. Wouldn’t you rather be promoted because you’re really good? I would.

Dr Hakim seems to me to be playing with fire – she may be stating a truism, that beauty has a positive effect on people’s estimations of you and their desire to help you. But she’s also suggesting that in a world in which women are already relentlessly preoccupied with how they look, they should be even more stressed out about it. Yes, Hakim applies the rule to men, too – but, although they’re getting more worried about looks, they’ve got a long way to go in the skin-deep neurosis stakes. And the male ability to get ahead at work has not been a problem, to date – so being told attractiveness can help won’t carry the same stressful meaning. Set an example by showing that women of all breast sizes can thrive at work. vexed@cityam.com

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Can Mold Develop in Saline Breast Implants?

Breast Implant Surgery

I was catching up on plastic surgery news and came across this very well worded article that provides some excellent practical guidelines for breast implants. Does this happen very often?

A few years ago I put up a YouTube video of my experience with silicone gel breast implants. Now every six months to a year somebody posts a comment about how saline implants are just as dangerous. A frequent portion of that response is a statement about a moldy saline implant. My response is and always has been, if saline implants are so often affected by mold, then why have I never seen it?

I have been implanting (and at times removing) breast implants for over 15 years. You would think if something was a dangerous and common phenomenon that I would be seeing it. I haven’t. Not even once.

A saline implant when left on a table outside of your body can develop mold, but this doesn’seem to happen inside patients. The difference is probably that when implants are properly placed inside a woman’s breasts, her immune system helps protect them from such problems.

Breast implants have risks, but these risks can be minimized by making good choices….choose good surgical talent and facilities, don’t go too large, put your implants under good soft tissue coverage and stay with saline over silicone implants in most cases.

Understand that there are special interest groups of sorts online that want everyone to believe breast implants are dangerous. These groups exaggerate and fabricate on a regular basis to support that belief.

Best Regards,

John Di Saia MD

Previous Entry: Reader Question: Do You Treat Skin Cancer?

Loading…

Improve the web with Nofollow Reciprocity.

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Breast Revision Options For Previous Breast Augmentation Patients – AmericanHealthAndBeauty.com

Breast Augmentation Surgery

This is one of the better articles have read in a long while about of the things that occur in the a women’s body when she elects to have breast augmentation, it also answers some questions that not too many people think to ask… Take a minute and be sure to have a read Breast [...]

This is one of the better articles have read in a long while about of the things that occur in the a women’s body when she elects to have breast augmentation, it also answers some questions that not too many people think to ask… Take a minute and be sure to have a read

Breast Revision Options For Previous Breast Augmentation Patients

Breast Revision, a highly specialized and customized procedure, can transform previously unsatisfactory breast implant results in just a short period of time.

According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast augmentation has gone up 22% since 2000 to nearly 300,000 procedures being performed in 2010. And while many of these patients that undergo breast enhancement are quite pleased with their results, there are also patients that may not be. Breast Revision can help both patients who are not happy with their immediate results or who have had breast implants that have aged or changed in the passing years.

Model Photo

According to Denver Breast Augmentation specialist Dr. Gregory Buford, “Prior to surgery, one of the most common complications is unrecognized asymmetry in the breasts. A few years ago, a study was released looking at asymmetry and the findings suggested that a majority of women have some degree of asymmetry. In reality, in clinical practice, I actually feel that almost all women have some degree of asymmetry. This asymmetry must be identified for appropriate preoperative planning to enable the most optimal outcome.”

An experienced and seasoned plastic surgeon who has performed many breast augmentations is sensitive to the nuances and subtle difference in breasts and will adjust their augmentation accordingly to deliver the most symmetric and visually pleasing results.

A common problem that patients who have undergone previous breast enhancement have is one breast may be higher on one side. There could be a number of reasons for this and many ways to correct it, depending on why it appears to be higher.

“Whenever something is implanted into the body, whether it be a hip, joint, or breast implant,” Dr. Buford notes, “A capsule will form around the implant because it is a foreign object.” The body forms a capsule around the foreign object to protect itself from the implant for as long as it is inside the body. While the capsule is soft the majority of the times, there are cases in which the capsule will harden and distort the implant.

“The capsule can tighten down and actually shrink down to distort the implant and patients see is a superior elevation of the implant and feel a very firm breast. At this point, most people think that their implants have became hard,” says Dr. Buford, “However, implants do not become hard and they never do. It is the scar tissue around the implant, the capsule that contracts and distorts the implant, resulting in a overly firm breast.”

This can be solved by removing the implant on the effected side and replacing it with a new implant in addition to making changes to the surrounding capsule. It is recommended that an entirely new implant be used since over time, low-grade bacteria can grow on a breast implant while it is in the body which then cannot be destroyed without the removing the implant.

Another option is surgical revision to the capsule that is formed by the body. In most cases, a simple procedure can be performed so that the breast implant drops and expands to a more natural setting. “Through the initial incision, I can score or add a transverse incision to the capsule to open it up and allow the implant to drop,” states Dr. Buford.

In more complex cases of capsular contracture, Dr. Buford may remove parts of or the entire capsule and reposition the implant within the breast pocket. This is performed depending on the degree of contracture, thickness of breast tissue overlying the capsule and the ease or difficulty of removal associated with capsule revision.

The last option is switching out the type of implant. As technology improves for silicone gel implants, swapping out saline implants for silicone can quickly augment the look and feel of breasts. “9 times out of 10, that actually works very well. For the 1 time out of 10 that it doesn’t work is in patients that have very thin overlying skin or very little glandular tissue to start out with,” Dr. Buford states, “In that case, a very effective way, we’ve found, is to put a sling – an interpositonal graft that thickens the skin between the implant and the breast tissue.”

In most cases of breast revision, the procedure takes approximately an hour and most patients experience as little as 24 hours or less of downtime before they can return to normal activity. The majority of patients can control the pain with over the counter pain medication and may experience some incisional pain but no where near the pain of the original surgery.

Of course, the best way to avoid breast revision is get it done right the first time. Denver breast implants specialist Dr. Buford stresses the importance of seeing an experienced physician who specializes in breast augmentation, “It really comes down to artistry. Patients should look for a surgeon that doesn’t want to just make their breasts bigger, they should look for someone who will customize their particular breast augmentation to them, to their bodies.”

(via Instapaper)

To Your Beauty!

Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Breast Augmentation

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

This Will Be The New Way Breast Augmentation Is Done Very Soon

Breast Augmentation Surgery

I read a very interesting article in Wired Magazine a few months back about utilizing a person's own fat when it comes to breast augmentation, though fat transfer has been around a while, this is VERY different I then recorded a youtube video about it that you can find here I also just finished reading [...]

I read a very interesting article in Wired Magazine a few months back about utilizing a person's own fat when it comes to breast augmentation, though fat transfer has been around a while, this is VERY different I then recorded a youtube video about it that you can find here

I also just finished reading about a surgical institute in Minnesota now offering this type of breast augmentation surgery… It really in exciting to see this technology being accepted by my fellow doctors… ultimately it safer for the patient and results in a true win / win for everyone.

Edina, MN, April 01, 2011 –(PR.com)– Shu Cosmetic Surgery Institute, Minnesota's leading center for comprehensive cosmetic care, has launched a revolutionary procedure, RejuveFillTM stem cell enhanced natural breast augmentation, that will allow patients to increase breast size using harvested fat and stem cells or Adipose Derived Regenerative Cells (ADRC’s) while simultaneously eliminating unwanted body fat. height="280" />

Hello, I’m Dr. Alexander Sinclair, your board-certified plastic surgeon. I was recently reading this interesting article in Wired Magazine and Today, I would like to talk about some exciting developments on the horizon of plastic surgery. You might not know this, but plastic surgeons have been on the forefront of many medical changes. As a matter of fact, the specialty is all about change. Changing people and furthering new developments.

That’s sort of the piece of property that plastic surgeons own. In the 50’s, plastic surgeons were the first doctors to do kidney transplants. Right now, plastic surgery teams are working on stem cell research. What they’re finding is that stem cells occur in fatty tissue. Much more frequently that had been thought.

As a matter of fact, you may find the stem cell in every 200 cells in your adipose or fat cell area compared to one in a few thousand in blood or bone marrow. That means that that is a really right place to find stem cells.

But what does a stem cell do and what is that? We hear about it all the time. Think about this. You have over 200 different types of cell types in your body. For example, you have bat cells and you have bone cells and you have muscle cells and kidney cells. A stem cell is the type of cell that when properly stimulated can develop into any of those cell lines. That’s pretty incredible because if you think about it, one of the real problems with aging or disease or trauma is the loss of certain cells.

For example, if you have a heart attack, you’re going to lose heart cells. Well, there’s no way the body can make new heart cells unless a used to unlock that secret process and stem cells can do that. Now, the applicability here in the plastic surgery world, one of the early applicabilities is for breast reconstruction and even breast augmentation. Because if we can take fat cells and that is the stem cell and then stimulate that stem cell and program it to replicate and build a breast, we’ll be able to build breasts with your own tissue.

That’s an exciting concept and it’s being done. And it’s not just being done in the labs, but it’s being done in experimental settings around the world right now in Europe, Asia, and in the United States. There are programs underway to reconstruct breasts using a person’s own fat by stimulating stem cells. We’re not ready to do this on an everyday basis for breast augmentations, but I would say, within my lifetime it will happen.

So stay tuned. I want to do an update on this because this area is changing rapidly and there are many applications of this stem cell therapy for plastic surgery. I’m Dr. Alexander Sinclair, your board-certified plastic surgeon.

To Your Beauty,
Dr. Alexander Sinclair

For more information please visit:
<a However, with this growth has come increasing confusion as to who is actually a qualified surgical provider and what level of training is considered to be acceptable. Denver, Colorado Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Gregory A. Buford explains the difference between a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and a Cosmetic Surgeon as well as discusses the five key questions to ask when choosing a plastic surgeon.

Englewood, CO (PRWEB) December 1, 2010

Over the last several years, the field of Cosmetic Surgery has grown dramatically and elective procedures have become more commonplace and utilized by a wider age range of both men and women. However, with this growth has come increasing confusion as to who is actually a qualified provider and what level of training is considered to be acceptable.

As a Board Certified Denver Plastic Surgeon and author of the recently published, “Beauty and the Business,”Dr. Gregory A. Buford has seen a growing trend of confusion amongst the Plastic Surgery consumer as to which certifications are actually valid and what constitutes a reputable provider. A few years ago, Dr. Buford decided to focus his practice in three basic areas: breast enhancement, body contouring, and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. And in doing so, he limited his practice to five surgical procedures including breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and blepharoplasty. In the area of non-surgical facial rejuvenation, he is now a high-volume injector of several products including BOTOX Cosmetic, Juvederm, and Radiesse. In addition, he has integrated the use of Lumenis fractional CO2 laser resurfacing into his practice in combination with medical skin care and the injectables to attain even more dramatic results.

Because of his focus and expertise in these areas, Dr. Buford is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and trainer in the field of facial injectables and laser resurfacing and was recently appointed to the MENTOR Worldwide Education Advisory Council for his experience with both breast enhancement as well as practice management. In addition, in June of 2010 he was asked to participate as one of two speakers in India on the topic of “Advanced Techniques in Breast Enhancement”.

And so what should you look for in a Plastic or Cosmetic Surgeon? First, it is critical to understand the difference between the two titles. Board Certification in Plastic Surgery is only open to physicians who have actually completed a Plastic Surgery residency and is an official board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Cosmetic Surgery, on the other hand, is a catch-all term and board certification in this newly created field is actually not recognized by the ABMS and is literally open to a physician of any specialty who simply completes a written test and can show that he has performed a certain number of cosmetic cases. The difference here lies in the breadth of training and expertise and is an important distinguishing factor between the two titles. With that in mind, in certain parts of the country, breast augmentation is actually being performed by physicians with little to no surgical experience aside from a weekend or short-week course. From there, they are “officially” certified to perform this surgery. Contrast that with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who has spent at least two full years practicing in his or her field and you can understand why there is such a big difference.

To this argument, some Cosmetic Surgeons have pointed to the fact that many Plastic Surgery residencies have been more focused on reconstructive surgery and have taught little to no cosmetic surgery during the actual training program. And while there is some truth to this argument in former years, this comment no longer holds merit. Plastic Surgery training programs have changed dramatically as has the entire field of Plastic Surgery and education and experience in the elective cosmetic cases is now emphasized much more so than in years past. In addition, board re-certification now even allows for sub-specialty focus in this area as the field has realized that this is an integral part of the changing world of Plastic Surgery.

So how do you choose a qualified Plastic Surgeon? Ask the following five questions of your provider to help you select the best of the best and hopefully enable you to achieve the most optimal results:

1. Are you Board Certified in your specialty? If so, what is your specialty?

a. This is an extremely important question and will help you identify what your physician’s specific background training is actually in.

2. How many cases of this specific surgery do you perform in a year?

a. The more experienced your surgeon is in a particular area, the more likely they will be able to manage challenging cases and the more confident they will hopefully be in performing your surgery.

3. What is your practice mix of cases?

a. Again, the more focused a surgeon is, the more experienced he or she will be in a particular area and potentially better able to manage more challenging cases.

4. Where do you perform your surgeries?

a. This is a very important question because it can help weed out non-plastic surgeons. Since all surgeons have to apply for privileges at a Surgery Center or hospital, their training background and experience is taken into account before granting these privileges. As such, many “Cosmetic Surgeons” operate out of their own facilities to bypass this requirement and so this should be a potential red flag when choosing your surgeon.

5. Can I talk to patients who have undergone this procedure?

a. This question should apply to both Plastic Surgeons as well as non-Plastic Surgeons. Get an idea from their patients as to how they were treated by the physician as well as the staff and ask them about their overall experience. Be wary of anyone who isn’t willing to let their patients speak for themselves.

Keep in mind that it is more challenging and far more expensive to fix a bad result than it is to get a good result the first time around. As such, take your time in choosing your surgeon and trust your gut instincts. Flashy marketing may get you into their office but solid training and real results should be the only thing that keeps you there. In the end, a great result can have far reaching positive effects on your body image for years to come and who you choose to perform your surgery is a critical step in the right direction.

Did you think they were one in the same?

To Your Beauty!

Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Plastic Surgery Beverly Hills

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Online Plastic Surgery Simulator, Photo Editing Tool SurgeryMorph Helps Patients Visualize

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

This is pretty interesting Online Plastic Surgery Simulator, Photo Editing Tool SurgeryMorph Helps Patients Visualize Potential Outcomes NKP Medical Marketing launches online photo simulator as a tool to help patients visualize potential outcomes of procedures such as Breast Augmentation, Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Buttock Lift, Facelift, Blepharoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Varicose Veins, Wrinkle Reduction and Laser Hair Removal. It is also quite beneficial for those patients at the early stages of deciding about plastic surgery, mainly because they can use this tool from home. Plus, SurgeryMorph encourages patients to contact a qualified Plastic Surgeon to learn what is possible for them.”

Phillips also notes that SurgeryMorph, an online photo editor and plastic surgery simulator, gives users the opportunity to share their photos with friends and with their surgeon. “Another thing we’ve done is enable built-in sharing features so that a user can share their photo results on Facebook or by email. Also, with a click of a button these prospective patients can then send the before and after simulation pictures to their favorite Plastic Surgeon and say, ‘This is the result I am hoping to achieve – is it realistic for me?’ These interactions really help get the patient and the Plastic Surgeon on the same page.”

SurgeryMorph allows its users to upload a photo of themselves and then edit it online using the different procedural tools available. There are options for Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift and Reduction, Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Buttock Lift, Labiaplasty, Facelift, Blepharoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Varicose Vein Reduction, Wrinkle Reduction and Laser Hair Removal. The tools have easy-to-use options and there are helpful, informative narrated videos to help you along the way.

Phillips adds, “This tool is a fun way to simulate potential procedural results, but it should be noted that it in no way can guarantee the projected results. It is important to speak to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to get a fuller, more comprehensive and accurate projection of realistically achievable results.”

About SurgeryMorph:
SurgeryMorph offers prospective plastic surgery patients an opportunity to upload photos of themselves that they can then edit online via various procedural tools in order to better visualize potential results. An implant can move into the armpit if you open the pocket too much,” Fiorillo said.

There are different ways a surgeon can put in breast implants. One way is through the underarm, and in that case there is a chance they can move laterally, according to Fiorillo.

“The rupture rate is between one to three percent and it can happen spontaneously or through trauma, such as a car accident,” he said. “The failure rate of the device [implant] is small, but there is a chance they can rupture.”

It is possible that Coffey had saline implants, because they are more likely to rupture than silicone implants.

“I tell my patients, breast augmentation is one of the safest procedures around. You may stand to get “thinner” with liposuction, but you don’t want to be too thin. A thin and even pad of fat on the skin flap is needed to keep you from looking weird.

Patients who have been “oversuctioned” tend to look “moth eaten.” The skin’s surface loses its even contour. In some cases a “cobblestone” appearance is seen. This is very hard to fix. Avoid it.

If you are looking for tightening of the tissues, liposuction isn’t it. In this case, skin resection and /or muscle tightening (like a Tummy Tuck) might be in order. Body Lift surgery is the category of skin tightening surgery in which tummy tuck surgery belongs. There are other body lifts named for the area in which they are employed.

Best Regards,

John Di Saia MD

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

To Your Beauty!
Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Plastic Surgery Beverly Hills

‘Bridalplasty’ unveils the worst in reality TV – Boston Herald

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

What are your thoughts on this new ‘reality’ TV show ? After each challenge, the brides cut one of their own.

Last bride standing wins a full body makeover and a celebrity-style wedding.

“If you’re going to have a dream wedding, then you want a dream body,” bride-to-be and hopeful patient Alexandra says in a typical exchange that plagues this “Stepford Wife”-like show.

E! released a DVD for review but withheld the final elimination sequence, and I have a firm rule never to grade a show when a network cheats on a screener. But I’ve never been so sorely tempted to stamp a big red F on its ugly forehead.

This is about as repulsive as reality TV gets.

The women, for those curious, are for the most part gorgeous.

Ashley can’t understand why so many skinny, umm, witches are in the competition. Of one, she says, “I could swallow her, seriously, and you wouldn’t even know. ‘Oh, are you bloated?’ ”

They’re just unhappy in their own skins and are convinced plastic surgery – several rounds, to be exact – will solve all their problems.

Right. Because reality shows are renowned for solving self-esteem issues.

Alexandra was a former contestant on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” where her fiance proposed to her on national television. Her bragging puts a bull’s-eye on her butt.

Kristen is a former beauty pageant winner. “I have more than enough experience competing with women,” she says. Dominique reports that her parents spent all their money on a dream wedding for her sister and left nothing for her. “It’s very sad for me,” she says.

E! apparently found these women through a black hole that leads to the 1950s.

Home videos introduce us to some of the men in these women’s lives. They range from skeptical to enthusiastic for the procedures. Flashing beneath images of Clemens in a hospital gown was the question “How Young Is Too Young?”
The show also questioned the fact that Clemens’ mom had gone to the same doctor, for the same surgery. Was that right? Of course, there is no right answer to either of these questions, but I can tell you that when I decided to have a breast reduction at age 18 — for many of the same reasons — it was my grandmother who first suggested it, and it saved my life. I was a tall, lanky kid, until my chest sprouted into 34Es. At 5-foot-7, 120 pounds, I was carrying around cantaloupes, each melon the size of my head. They chafed together leaving red welts inside my cleavage, weighed on my petite back and nearly knocked me out during cross-country practice at my small New England boarding school, which had a three-season athletic requirement. “Hey, Gerber,” the basketball team captain yelled out to me. “You have a lot of extra baby food. Can I have some of that milk?” His hyena laughter rang in my ears. I bolted to the nearest women’s bathroom, tears streaming down my cheeks. Despite the sexuality radiating mixed messages from my upper body, I had never taken off my shirt in front a boy, much less myself. I was too disgusted to glance down in the shower. It wasn’t just men who used my chest to deflate me. After practice, surrounded by stick-straight all-American blondes, a female teammate with B-cups turned to me and said, “I think you actually look at lot skinner than you are, because your tits are so big.”
I hid my breasts under sports bras and wrapped them tightly beneath layers of packing tape, preferring a uni-boob to the humiliation of looking down and seeing my cleavage creased together like two pieces of fatty chicken meat. I believed my enormous chest was my fault, and if I worked hard enough I could manage my bra size. At 16, I mistakenly believed my ballooning bust would shrink if I were emaciated. But when I returned to school 20 pounds lighter, after a summer in Israel spent eating oranges and Diet Coke exclusively, I was still suffocating. Although my breasts never changed, something else did: my resolve. The less I ate, I discovered, the more attention I attracted for something other than my boobs. Someone even reported me to the campus therapist. She sat next to me in a long linen dress the color of hay and said, “I’m concerned about your health.” But I didn’t have eating issues; anorexia was never my problem of choice. Then one day, during a three-mile trail race, my legs gave into the pressure. With each pounding step, I had felt shocks of pain rushing up my shins. Now I could feel myself slowing down until I was no longer in motion, watching other runners pass me. I rested on the ground in the woods, unable to stand up, as the last ponytail waved goodbye. The stress of my unhappiness had literally caused cracks in my frail frame, deep fractures in both my legs. As my surgeon father held the shattered black and white images up to the light, he said, “Maybe you weren’t built to be a runner.” To me, his words were a reminder that no matter what I did, I was stuck inside a body I couldn’t stand. At the time, I thought breast reductions were only for old women, like my grandmother, until she pulled me into the bathroom on the first night of Passover. “Let me show you my breasts,” she offered. Without waiting for my response, her lacey bra was draped around her waist, and two perfect C cups pointed at me. “Not one scar,” she bragged. “Lot’s of vitamin E and good skin.” “What did they look like before?” I asked. “Yours.” It was the first time I’d considered surgery. I was desperate to rid myself of the massive inheritance that had weighed on my back and self-image. I was 18 years old, a freshman in college, when I found the courage to ask my father for help. “Please, Dad. I need to get rid of my breasts,” I told him. It was the only time I ever referred to them in front of him. “I’ll set up a consultation as soon as I can,” he said calmly. “I don’t need to consult anyone.” “There are risks — scars, loss of sensation, a 40 percent chance of not being able to breast-feed,” he ticked them off, methodically. “I don’t care. I want surgery,” I blurted. Two months later, I waited behind a white curtain in the surgical wing of Massachusetts General Hospital, fidgeting with my long gown. I shut my eyes and tried to remember a time before my chest consumed me, before I hated my body. I was convinced that all I had to do was this, and I’d be happy. I couldn’t block out the loud hospital sounds — clinking metal instruments and nurse’s sneakers squeaking against the linoleum floors. I jumped when a pretty nurse pulled back the protective curtain. “You’ll be fine,” my mother said as she kissed me on the forehead. My father patted my back silently. I woke up in the recovery room staring at a fuzzy woman. I knew it was my mom because the room smelled like Chanel No. 5. I felt safe again. After four days of pills and sleep, I stood topless in my parents’ bathroom watching my mother remove white gauze, pulling off individual squares crusted with pus and hardened blood. I didn’t recognize the small swollen breasts that fit perfectly inside the cup of my hands. They felt like a burden. There were lines of stitches circling my newly carved nipples and a mixture of brown and purple psychedelic bruises. “Much better,” Mom proclaimed, looking at me in the mirror as if I’d done something important. I knew I had too. She placed her delicate hands on my bare shoulders. “I had no idea you were so thin.” Immediately, my mother saw a change in me. In fact, everyone noticed — everyone but me. I’d put all my chips in the reduction basket, hoping surgery would instantly change the way I saw myself. When it was over, I was supposed to be happy and perfect, but I wasn’t yet. In my mind, I was still top-heavy, no matter what. Now it’s been eight years since my surgery. At 26, I no longer wake up and dread getting dressed. I own bras in colors other than flesh, nude and taupe, and sometimes I don’t even bother with one. The physical scars have faded to the point where I hardly notice them. For the first time, I am consistently running every other day, careful with my legs, which still ache in the center of my shin when I’ve gone too far. A few months ago, I walked into the lobby of my building, sweating after four miles in the sun. While I waited for the elevator, I overheard a petite woman talking with her friend about her new exercise program. “I definitely feel a lot better. Not as good as that girl,” she said, pointing in my direction. When I turned around to a get a look at the great body, I realized no one else was there. “You really didn’t know I was talking about you?” she asked me as we shuffled into the elevator. “I wish I could see whatever it is you just saw,” I confided. “Look again,” she smiled, as the doors opened onto my floor. I haven’t seen the petite woman since that day, but somehow her kind and unexpected compliment has stayed with me, counteracting the tape that had been playing on repeat in my head since puberty. She’d never seen the other me, while I hadn’t allowed myself to see anything else. So, I decided to follow her advice. I pulled out the size-10 Betsey Johnson dress I wore to my high school graduation — the only one I could find that covered me completely — and put it on over my gym clothes in front of the full-length mirror. As the fabric draped off my slender frame, bunching around my small chest, I hardly remembered the insecure person it had once belonged to — the teenage version of myself I’d found the strength to save.

To Your Beauty!

Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Plastic Surgery Beverly Hills

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Botox Didn’t Work – Why?

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

This is the first well written article on botox , I came across it and wanted to share it with you… Have a read… Botox Didn’t Work – Why? These compounds are proteins and there are a number on the market. Botox was the first, a botulinum type A protein. Myobloc followed as an alternative type B product. Then we have Dysport, another type A. These are the most common three in the US anyway. There are differing trade names for these compounds and they vary in potency. Your injector needs to know what he or she is doing and part of this is picking and knowing good material.

People often complain that they have had varying experiences with their different treatments. The truth about it is that the reasons for this are complicated. A particular injection might not work as well as another due to several factors:

(1) The exact compound used – A reliable material is a key to a good result.

(2) The potency of the material – These toxins must be kept cold to retain their strength. When they get warm they lose their punch. They might work less well or for a lesser period of time.

(3) The dilution – Cheapie outfits simply dilute the compound to make the price lower. It will then last a shorter period or not affect as much of a change.

(4) The injector’s skill – Better injectors can get better results by more carefully targeting the proper muscles.

(5) Individual sensitivity – These compounds simply work better on some people than others.

So when you get to a injector who gets a good result for you, consider staying put. He or she is working the combination right for you. And when you go to a cheap injector, understand why it might make a difference.

Best Regards,

John Di Saia MD

(via Instapaper)

Have you had an unplesant experience with botox before ?

To Your Beauty!

Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Plastic Surgery Beverly Hills

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Article: Medicare Should Fund Breast Enlargement Surgery in Australia

Breast Augmentation Surgery

What are your thoughts on this ? Women who had lost their breasts due to diseases such as cancer also fell into the category, but were included in a raft of other items on the Medical Benefits Scheme. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons has asked the Federal Government to consider extending the tax-payer-funded benefits to flat-chested women, who suffer what is known in the industry as ‘hypomastia’. Society president Peter Callan said women might feel a “loss of self-esteem due to undeveloped breasts”. “There are a certain number of women with significant hypomastia who would benefit from breast augmentation from both a psychological and physical perspective,” News.com.au quoted him as saying. Breast implants for hypomastia were included under Medicare in the 1970s and 1980s, but the legislation was changed and the item number removed about 10 years ago.
Source-ANI

Social Networking Sites are Distracting Children and Affecting Academic Performance

What Most Americans Think About Marriage ?

(via Instapaper)

To Your Beauty!

Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

City life and the brain

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

As a plastic surgeon its my charge to ensure people can feel their best, and ensuring people have peace of mind is at the top of the list. While some procedures have no downtime at all, such as Botox and fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, and other procedures have essentially no downtime and can be done at lunchtime.

Depending on what procedure you had performed, the restrictions may vary. Liposuction procedures are minimally invasive and done on an outpatient basis. Many people take a few days to about a week or so after their surgery was performed. After that initial week, you can resume work as well as working out in the gym with care and with your doctor’s advice on specifics. We ask that you do not work the areas that the surgery was performed on so that you do not stretch the skin that we are trying to get to shrink post surgery with compression garments. For instance, if you had liposuction performed on your abdomen area, then it is best to refrain from doing crunches or working out on abdominal machines for a few weeks post procedure. Other more invasive procedures such as an abdominoplasty and breast augmentation do have a bit more restrictions as far as when you can get back to the gym. After breast augmentation surgery, we ask that you do not do any activity or work outs that may shake the breasts. This involves running and jogging, however cardio and weights can be resumed within a few weeks after surgery as long as you do not do anything that involves you lifting your arms over your head. As far as Los Angeles abdominoplasty procedures are concerned, we want you to abstain from heavy exercise for about a month or so after surgery. Again, we want you walking around and moving around the day you have your surgery performed and do not want our patients staying in bed all day.

It is important to meet with your surgeon during an initial consultation and be sure to cover all the bases before undergoing your procedure. Be sure to discuss expectations, risks, as well as recovery time as well. Southern California plastic surgery can be a wonderful start to a new and improved you, so meet with your doctor today!

Sent with Reeder

To Your Beauty!

Dr. Alexander Sinclair

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

TSA Body Scanner Detects Breast Implants?

Breast Implant Surgery

Its like anything else…we won’t know the negative side effects for years to come… TSA Body Scanner Detects Breast Implants? Researchers from the University of Illinois of Chicago published the results of this study in the November issue of Cancer Prevention Research.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Wancai Yang, professor of pathology at the UIC College of Medicine along with his colleagues studied genetic and how nutrition can prevent intestinal cancer and tumors. The study looked at mice that had the Apc1638 and Muc2 gene knocked out which cause the rodents to develop intestinal tumors with the Apc1638 and colitis with the Muc2 gene knockout. Colitis is a chronic ongoing inflammation in the large intestines which can lead to colorectal cancer.

The researcher tested to see if black raspberries supplemented in the diet of the mice would prevent colon cancer by stopping the development of tumors. The mice were given a 10 percent freeze-dried black raspberry powder over a twelve week time period.

Posted via email from beverlyhillsplasticsurgery’s posterous

Botox maker Allergan is about to launch clinical trials of a hair-growth tre…

Skin Care

It will be interesting to see what Allergan comes up with next…. One common message is that I have been nominated to be one of the Top Plastic Surgeons. If I remit $199 I will receive a display worthy plaque that I can hang next to my desk for my patients to know that there surgeon is the “top surgeon”. I appreciate the problems patients have in trying to find a plastic surgeon they can trust. Please allow me to give you some helpful starting advice, to find a competent and caring physician.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery will supply you with a list of board certified plastic surgeons in your area. Contact the society at: www.plasticsurgery.org.

Local and state medical societies will have lists of plastic surgeons in your area. For example in Los Angeles you can contact: www.lasps.org.

Ask a physician you trust to refer a plastic surgeon.

Ask friends who have had plastic surgery about their experience and for a referral.

Get two or three referrals, and schedule a consultation. Many plastic surgeons will offer a complimentary consultation.

Choose a doctor that is board certified. Understand which board has certified him or her, ask about their credentials. For a list of boards you can contact: www.abms.org.

Does the physician listen to you? Were you able to express yourself fully? Are you on the same “wavelength” as the doctor? If the answer to any of these questions is no, keep looking.

Does the physician give you a clear explanation of what the problem is, alternative invasive and non-invasive treatments, and what you can expect after the surgery. If not keep looking

Be comfortable with the staff, facilities and fees. If you are not keep looking.

Consult with your doctor at least twice before sugery.

This list is a beginning. I sympathize with the patient and their concern about finding the best plastic surgeon. Fortunately, there are many talented, caring plastic surgeons who have the best interests of their patients at heart. Doctors should put themselves in the patients position and ask and then answer “what would they like to know about the operation?”. Being understood is an advantage for the patient and should be for the doctor as well. Does he or she use words and explanations you can understand? Is the doctor speaking directly? Speaking around information or using words like “natural result”, is not enough. They are commonly used in breast augmentation. More than 300,000 breast augmentations are performed each year in the United States. Silicone is a molecule that contains the elements, silicon, carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen in a repetitive sequence. The sequence of atoms allows the silicone to be made into either a solid, elastomer or gel. Therefore both the shell of the implant and the filling is silicone. The shell is durable and solid it is an elastomer. The filling material is a gel. Breast implants using cartilage, paraffin and other materials have been tried since the 1880’s. But it was not until the 1960’s that the Dow Company with doctors Gerow and Cronin developed a relatively safe product. The first generation implants were tear drop shaped, filled with a thick viscous gel and had a Dacron patch on the back to hold them in place. These implants revolutionized breast augmentation and reconstruction. Surgeons in the 1970’s and 1980’s helped develop the second generation of implants. These implants in an effort to be even more natural had thinner shells and “runnier” gel fills. These were the implants that were most involved in the class action lawsuits of the 1990”s.Third and fourth generation implants have increased safety and performance. These implants have a thicker more cohesive gel and shells with barrier to prevent “gel bleed”. The third and fourth generation implants are those most used today and come in anatomical and round shapes in smooth or textured styles. High cohesive or form stable implants are undergoing testing. This is an abbreviated summary of breast implant history. I have placed thousands of implants over the past twenty five years. I have placed, first, second, third and fourth generation implants, round, and anatomical implants, expander implants, and polyurethane implants. The three most often performed cosmetic surgeries on teenagers are breast implants, rhinoplasty, and laser hair removal. In general, teens that have plastic surgery do it to fit in and be accepted by their peers. A teenager’s appearance can be a very emotional issue, and they often allow peer pressure and the perceived pressure on them because of the way advertising and television portrays the perfect human form to influence their decision. These two issues account for the fact that in 2008, around 180,000 teens had some form of cosmetic procedure.

Some forms of plastic surgery for people this young are more understandable than others, such as those that fix a very noticeable defect or problem like the removal of a birthmark. But procedures simply to change the appearance, like breast implants or rhinoplasty require serious consideration by both the parents and the doctors involved. The teenage body and features may not be fully formed, making cosmetic surgery riskier than in someone who has stopped growing. Many teenagers don’t stop to think about the surgical aspects like any drawbacks, complications, and healing time involved.

Parents of teenagers who want some type of plastic surgery to improve their looks should look carefully into their child’s motivation. If your son or daughter feels that he or she is flawed or imperfect, this may be a sign of emotional issues that go beyond what that child sees when looking in a mirror or why they see the imperfections.

Until Next Time,

Alexander Sinclair M.D.

The Death Of Mascara

Featured

Eye Lashes

Eyelid

Latisse

Mascara

Great mascara brands may soon find themselves at risk of women no longer buying their products Dr. Alexander Sinclair MD, a prominent Beverly Hills, board certified plastic surgeon expects Latisse to become a mainstay of eyelash aesthetic treatments in the near future. For maximum safety, the American Society of Plastic Surgery recommends that:

Any planned anesthesia should be administered by skilled, licensed personnel acting under the direction of an anesthesiologist or the operating surgeon.

Before any type of anesthesia is used, the surgeon or anesthetist must take a full medical history. A physical examination and appropriate lab tests may also be performed. Your surgeon needs to know if you have any serious medical problems or have had previous adverse reaction to any other type of anesthesia. Also, you must let the anesthetist know about any medications you are taking (including herbal supplements), any known drug allergies, when you last ate and whether you smoke cigarettes or use alcohol or illegal drugs.

You should be assured that you will receive individual monitoring by skilled, licensed personnel before, during and after the procedure. Staff who are familiar with the warning signs of cardiac or respiratory distress and are trained in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), should be on hand to monitor your procedure and recovery following your surgery.

If you are told that you will be kept overnight at the surgical facility while you recuperate, make sure that the facility is accredited by a recognized agency. In an accredited facility you will receive around-the-clock care and monitoring by two or more skilled and licensed staff members with at least one trained in ACLS. You will also be assured that the facility has the necessary equipment and medications to handle complications that may arise and an emergency plan in case you need to be transferred to the hospital.

Dr. Alexander Sinclair, his staff and independent associated caretakers follow the recommendations of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Geraldo at Large Interviews Dr. Sinclair

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery

diprivan

Geraldo Rivera

Michael Jackson

propofol

Video

Dr. Alexander Sinclair was recently interviewed by Geraldo at Large, on the power effects of Diprovan, commonly known as Propofol. There was no change in muscle flexion (bending), extension or raising the arms when preoperative muscle function was compared with the three-month and six-month evaluation periods. In addition, there was no significant difference in muscle function regardless of implant size.In assessing sensory changes of the breast, both pressure and vibratory testing were performed. Results from the study indicated a significant change in breast sensation at three months postoperatively but the sensation returned by six months, indicating that the change was temporary while the tissue surrounding the breast healed. There was no correlation stated with size of implant or surgical incision.

This is welcome news for all yoga practicing, treadmill running, tennis and golf players. Your performance in the gym shouldn’t suffer and you should be as sensitive as before.

Breast Feeding and Silicone Implants

Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast Implant Surgery

Breast Augmentation

Breast Feeding

Breast Implants

Silicone Implants

Breast-feeding is known to possess nutritional and immunologic properties superior to those found in infant formulas. Breast-feeding seems to be particularly protective against some of the common childhood conditions such as eczema, otitis media, and iron-deficiency anemia, and is beneficial to neurodevelopment in premature infants. Also, there are substantial health benefits of breast-feeding for the mother and possibly for the whole family. Millions of silicone breast implants have been placed for either reconstructive or cosmetic surgeries. Many of the women with breast implants will become pregnant after their surgery. Women with silicone implants may be apprehensive and confused over whether it is safe to breast feed.

Mothers with breast implants may decide not to breast feed their infants because of the mothers silicone getting into their breast milk. A study by Dr. John Semple published in The Journal of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons should help them in their decision making. The research shows that when you compare women with breast implants to women who do not have breast implants there is no difference in silicon levels in the breast milk or in blood. Silicon levels in store bought cow’s milk was 15 times higher than in the milk of women with breast implants. Silicon levels in many commercially made infant nutrition formulas was often 80 times higher than the levels in the milk of women with breast implants!

Of course the choice is up to the woman, but this information that women with silicone breast implants have less silicon in their milk than in infant formulas coupled with the health, emotional and developmental benefits of breast feeding makes the choice easier.
