This is a really unfortunate story to have read this morning, for the past 20 or so years I have been telling patients who come into my office. Accidents happen before, during and after surgery and this is exactly why it’s so important that every detail be planned and discussed with patients before surgery so there his a clear understanding of the entire process.

If you are considering an cosmetic procedure, big or small be sure to ask plenty of questions and feel nothing short of comfortable with the plastic surgeon you are considering to pick for your cosmetic procedure.

To your health,

Dr. Sinclair

Liposuction Tragedy: Mother’s Death Highlights Dangers of Plastic Surgery – ABC News
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/liposuction-tragedy-mothers-death-highlights-dangers-plastic-surgery/story?id=13890319

Maria Shortall, a housekeeper from Weston, Fla., died after undergoing a standard lipo-sculpting procedure in mid-June at the Alyne Medical Rejuvenation Institute in Florida. Shortall worked seven days a week to pay for the $3,600 procedure, which was intended to take a few hours.

“Approximately 22 incisions [were made], which is a significant amount, in terms of a relatively, an otherwise relatively minor cosmetic procedure,” the family attorney, Michael Freedland, said. “What we do know is that a 38-year-old, otherwise healthy woman, shouldn’t go in for a minor cosmetic procedure, and die.”

At some point during Shortall’s procedure, things started to go wrong. The facility decided that she needed to be transported to Cleveland Clinic, where she was eventually pronounced dead.

Dr. Buford Discusses the Difference Between Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons and Provides Five Key Questions to Ask When Selecting Your Surgeon

Over the last several years, the field of Cosmetic Surgery has grown dramatically and elective procedures have become more common place and utilized by a wider age range of both men and women. However, with this growth has come increasing confusion as to who is actually a qualified surgical provider and what level of training is considered to be acceptable. Denver, Colorado Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Gregory A. Buford explains the difference between a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and a Cosmetic Surgeon as well as discusses the five key questions to ask when choosing a plastic surgeon.

Englewood, CO (PRWEB) December 1, 2010

Over the last several years, the field of Cosmetic Surgery has grown dramatically and elective procedures have become more commonplace and utilized by a wider age range of both men and women. However, with this growth has come increasing confusion as to who is actually a qualified provider and what level of training is considered to be acceptable.

As a Board Certified Denver Plastic Surgeon and author of the recently published, “Beauty and the Business,”Dr. Gregory A. Buford has seen a growing trend of confusion amongst the Plastic Surgery consumer as to which certifications are actually valid and what constitutes a reputable provider. A few years ago, Dr. Buford decided to focus his practice in three basic areas: breast enhancement, body contouring, and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. And in doing so, he limited his practice to five surgical procedures including breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and blepharoplasty. In the area of non-surgical facial rejuvenation, he is now a high-volume injector of several products including BOTOX Cosmetic, Juvederm, and Radiesse. In addition, he has integrated the use of Lumenis fractional CO2 laser resurfacing into his practice in combination with medical skin care and the injectables to attain even more dramatic results.

Because of his focus and expertise in these areas, Dr. Buford is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and trainer in the field of facial injectables and laser resurfacing and was recently appointed to the MENTOR Worldwide Education Advisory Council for his experience with both breast enhancement as well as practice management. In addition, in June of 2010 he was asked to participate as one of two speakers in India on the topic of “Advanced Techniques in Breast Enhancement”.

And so what should you look for in a Plastic or Cosmetic Surgeon? First, it is critical to understand the difference between the two titles. Board Certification in Plastic Surgery is only open to physicians who have actually completed a Plastic Surgery residency and is an official board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Cosmetic Surgery, on the other hand, is a catch-all term and board certification in this newly created field is actually not recognized by the ABMS and is literally open to a physician of any specialty who simply completes a written test and can show that he has performed a certain number of cosmetic cases. The difference here lies in the breadth of training and expertise and is an important distinguishing factor between the two titles. With that in mind, in certain parts of the country, breast augmentation is actually being performed by physicians with little to no surgical experience aside from a weekend or short-week course. From there, they are “officially” certified to perform this surgery. Contrast that with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who has spent at least two full years practicing in his or her field and you can understand why there is such a big difference.

To this argument, some Cosmetic Surgeons have pointed to the fact that many Plastic Surgery residencies have been more focused on reconstructive surgery and have taught little to no cosmetic surgery during the actual training program. And while there is some truth to this argument in former years, this comment no longer holds merit. Plastic Surgery training programs have changed dramatically as has the entire field of Plastic Surgery and education and experience in the elective cosmetic cases is now emphasized much more so than in years past. In addition, board re-certification now even allows for sub-specialty focus in this area as the field has realized that this is an integral part of the changing world of Plastic Surgery.

So how do you choose a qualified Plastic Surgeon? Ask the following five questions of your provider to help you select the best of the best and hopefully enable you to achieve the most optimal results:

1. Are you Board Certified in your specialty? If so, what is your specialty?

a. This is an extremely important question and will help you identify what your physician’s specific background training is actually in.

2. How many cases of this specific surgery do you perform in a year?

a. The more experienced your surgeon is in a particular area, the more likely they will be able to manage challenging cases and the more confident they will hopefully be in performing your surgery.

3. What is your practice mix of cases?

a. Again, the more focused a surgeon is, the more experienced he or she will be in a particular area and potentially better able to manage more challenging cases.

4. Where do you perform your surgeries?

a. This is a very important question because it can help weed out non-plastic surgeons. Since all surgeons have to apply for privileges at a Surgery Center or hospital, their training background and experience is taken into account before granting these privileges. As such, many “Cosmetic Surgeons” operate out of their own facilities to bypass this requirement and so this should be a potential red flag when choosing your surgeon.

5. Can I talk to patients who have undergone this procedure?

a. This question should apply to both Plastic Surgeons as well as non-Plastic Surgeons. Get an idea from their patients as to how they were treated by the physician as well as the staff and ask them about their overall experience. Be wary of anyone who isn’t willing to let their patients speak for themselves.

Keep in mind that it is more challenging and far more expensive to fix a bad result than it is to get a good result the first time around. As such, take your time in choosing your surgeon and trust your gut instincts. Flashy marketing may get you into their office but solid training and real results should be the only thing that keeps you there. In the end, a great result can have far reaching positive effects on your body image for years to come and who you choose to perform your surgery is a critical step in the right direction.

Did you think they were one in the same?

Online Plastic Surgery Simulator, Photo Editing Tool SurgeryMorph Helps Patients Visualize Potential Outcomes

NKP Medical Marketing launches online photo simulator as a tool to help patients visualize potential outcomes of procedures such as Breast Augmentation, Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Buttock Lift, Facelift, Blepharoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Varicose Veins, Wrinkle Reduction and Laser Hair Removal.

Culver City, CA (PRWEB) December 1, 2010

NKP Medical Marketing is proud to present SurgeryMorph, a new, innovative tool for prospective plastic surgery patients to use in visualizing potential results and opening up a dialogue with Plastic Surgeons.

“Many women have entertained the idea of Plastic Surgery for both cosmetic and reconstructive reasons,” David Phillips, CEO of NKP Medical Marketing says, “but being able to really see the kinds of results they could potentially achieve in a manner that is both fun and easy — it really takes a lot of the guesswork out the process. It is also quite beneficial for those patients at the early stages of deciding about plastic surgery, mainly because they can use this tool from home. Plus, SurgeryMorph encourages patients to contact a qualified Plastic Surgeon to learn what is possible for them.”

Phillips also notes that SurgeryMorph, an online photo editor and plastic surgery simulator, gives users the opportunity to share their photos with friends and with their surgeon. “Another thing we’ve done is enable built-in sharing features so that a user can share their photo results on Facebook or by email. Also, with a click of a button these prospective patients can then send the before and after simulation pictures to their favorite Plastic Surgeon and say, ‘This is the result I am hoping to achieve – is it realistic for me?’ These interactions really help get the patient and the Plastic Surgeon on the same page.”

SurgeryMorph allows its users to upload a photo of themselves and then edit it online using the different procedural tools available. There are options for Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift and Reduction, Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Buttock Lift, Labiaplasty, Facelift, Blepharoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Varicose Vein Reduction, Wrinkle Reduction and Laser Hair Removal. The tools have easy-to-use options and there are helpful, informative narrated videos to help you along the way.

Phillips adds, “This tool is a fun way to simulate potential procedural results, but it should be noted that it in no way can guarantee the projected results. It is important to speak to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to get a fuller, more comprehensive and accurate projection of realistically achievable results.”

About SurgeryMorph:

SurgeryMorph offers prospective plastic surgery patients an opportunity to upload photos of themselves that they can then edit online via various procedural tools in order to better visualize potential results. Patients are then able to use SurgereyMorph’s built-in sharing feature to send the results of their virtual procedure to Plastic Surgeons, friends or family as a way of opening the door to discussing their realistic plastic surgery options. To learn more about SurgeryMorph, contact David Phillips at (866) 539-2201 or visit surgerymorph.com.

Liposuction Doesn’t Firm Up Your Skin

November 28th, 2010 by admin Leave a reply »

If fatty tissues are available, liposuction can decrease them. You may stand to get “thinner” with liposuction, but you don’t want to be too thin. A thin and even pad of fat on the skin flap is needed to keep you from looking weird.

Patients who have been “oversuctioned” tend to look “moth eaten.” The skin’s surface loses its even contour. In some cases a “cobblestone” appearance is seen. This is very hard to fix. Avoid it.

If you are looking for tightening of the tissues, liposuction isn’t it. In this case, skin resection and /or muscle tightening (like a Tummy Tuck) might be in order. Body Lift surgery is the category of skin tightening surgery in which tummy tuck surgery belongs. There are other body lifts named for the area in which they are employed.

By Mark A.

“BRIDALPLASTY”: Incomplete

Series premiere tonight at 9 on E!

“Bridalplasty” just might be the most depressing TV series ever to air on television.

In this unscripted competition on E!, 12 brides-to-be are isolated for four months in a luxurious mansion and compete in a series of challenges to win plastic surgery procedures. After each challenge, the brides cut one of their own.

Last bride standing wins a full body makeover and a celebrity-style wedding.

“If you’re going to have a dream wedding, then you want a dream body,” bride-to-be and hopeful patient Alexandra says in a typical exchange that plagues this “Stepford Wife”-like show.

E! released a DVD for review but withheld the final elimination sequence, and I have a firm rule never to grade a show when a network cheats on a screener. But I’ve never been so sorely tempted to stamp a big red F on its ugly forehead.

This is about as repulsive as reality TV gets.

The women, for those curious, are for the most part gorgeous.

Ashley can’t understand why so many skinny, umm, witches are in the competition. Of one, she says, “I could swallow her, seriously, and you wouldn’t even know. ‘Oh, are you bloated?’ ”

They’re just unhappy in their own skins and are convinced plastic surgery – several rounds, to be exact – will solve all their problems.

Right. Because reality shows are renowned for solving self-esteem issues.

Alexandra was a former contestant on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” where her fiance proposed to her on national television. Her bragging puts a bull’s-eye on her butt.

Kristen is a former beauty pageant winner. “I have more than enough experience competing with women,” she says. Dominique reports that her parents spent all their money on a dream wedding for her sister and left nothing for her. “It’s very sad for me,” she says.

E! apparently found these women through a black hole that leads to the 1950s.

Home videos introduce us to some of the men in these women’s lives. They range from skeptical to enthusiastic for the procedures. One grins at the thought of his intended undergoing breast augmentation.

Botox Didn’t Work – Why?

November 23rd, 2010 by admin

The botulinum toxin industry is complicated. These compounds are proteins and there are a number on the market. Botox was the first, a botulinum type A protein. Myobloc followed as an alternative type B product. Then we have Dysport, another type A. These are the most common three in the US anyway. There are differing trade names for these compounds and they vary in potency. Your injector needs to know what he or she is doing and part of this is picking and knowing good material.

People often complain that they have had varying experiences with their different treatments. The truth about it is that the reasons for this are complicated. A particular injection might not work as well as another due to several factors:

(1) The exact compound used – A reliable material is a key to a good result.

(2) The potency of the material – These toxins must be kept cold to retain their strength. When they get warm they lose their punch. They might work less well or for a lesser period of time.

(3) The dilution – Cheapie outfits simply dilute the compound to make the price lower. It will then last a shorter period or not affect as much of a change.

(4) The injector’s skill – Better injectors can get better results by more carefully targeting the proper muscles.

(5) Individual sensitivity – These compounds simply work better on some people than others.

So when you get to a injector who gets a good result for you, consider staying put. He or she is working the combination right for you. And when you go to a cheap injector, understand why it might make a difference.

Best Regards,

Recovery from Procedures

Plastic Surgery Blog

Most surgical procedures carry a few post operation restrictions with them before you return to normal, everyday activity. While some procedures have no downtime at all, such as Botox and fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, and other procedures have essentially no downtime and can be done at lunchtime.

Depending on what procedure you had performed, the restrictions may vary. Liposuction procedures are minimally invasive and done on an outpatient basis. Many people take a few days to about a week or so after their surgery was performed. After that initial week, you can resume work as well as working out in the gym with care and with your doctor’s advice on specifics. We ask that you do not work the areas that the surgery was performed on so that you do not stretch the skin that we are trying to get to shrink post surgery with compression garments. For instance, if you had liposuction performed on your abdomen area, then it is best to refrain from doing crunches or working out on abdominal machines for a few weeks post procedure. Other more invasive procedures such as an abdominoplasty and breast augmentation do have a bit more restrictions as far as when you can get back to the gym. After breast augmentation surgery, we ask that you do not do any activity or work outs that may shake the breasts. This involves running and jogging, however cardio and weights can be resumed within a few weeks after surgery as long as you do not do anything that involves you lifting your arms over your head. As far as Los Angeles abdominoplasty procedures are concerned, we want you to abstain from heavy exercise for about a month or so after surgery. Again, we want you walking around and moving around the day you have your surgery performed and do not want our patients staying in bed all day.

It is important to meet with your surgeon during an initial consultation and be sure to cover all the bases before undergoing your procedure. Be sure to discuss expectations, risks, as well as recovery time as well. Southern California plastic surgery can be a wonderful start to a new and improved you, so meet with your doctor today!

(Best Syndication News) – According to a study black raspberries prevented colon tumors in mice that were fed the fruit. Researchers from the University of Illinois of Chicago published the results of this study in the November issue of Cancer Prevention Research.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Wancai Yang, professor of pathology at the UIC College of Medicine along with his colleagues studied genetic and how nutrition can prevent intestinal cancer and tumors. The study looked at mice that had the Apc1638 and Muc2 gene knocked out which cause the rodents to develop intestinal tumors with the Apc1638 and colitis with the Muc2 gene knockout. Colitis is a chronic ongoing inflammation in the large intestines which can lead to colorectal cancer.

The researcher tested to see if black raspberries supplemented in the diet of the mice would prevent colon cancer by stopping the development of tumors. The mice were given a 10 percent freeze-dried black raspberry powder over a twelve week time period.

One common message is that I have been nominated to be one of the Top Plastic Surgeons. If I remit $199 I will receive a display worthy plaque that I can hang next to my desk for my patients to know that there surgeon is the “top surgeon”. I appreciate the problems patients have in trying to find a plastic surgeon they can trust. Please allow me to give you some helpful starting advice, to find a competent and caring physician.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery will supply you with a list of board certified plastic surgeons in your area. Contact the society at: www.plasticsurgery.org.

Local and state medical societies will have lists of plastic surgeons in your area. For example in Los Angeles you can contact: www.lasps.org.

Ask a physician you trust to refer a plastic surgeon.

Ask friends who have had plastic surgery about their experience and for a referral.

Get two or three referrals, and schedule a consultation. Many plastic surgeons will offer a complimentary consultation.

Choose a doctor that is board certified. Understand which board has certified him or her, ask about their credentials. For a list of boards you can contact: www.abms.org.

Does the physician listen to you? Were you able to express yourself fully? Are you on the same “wavelength” as the doctor? If the answer to any of these questions is no, keep looking.

Does the physician give you a clear explanation of what the problem is, alternative invasive and non-invasive treatments, and what you can expect after the surgery. If not keep looking

Be comfortable with the staff, facilities and fees. If you are not keep looking.

Consult with your doctor at least twice before sugery.

This list is a beginning. I sympathize with the patient and their concern about finding the best plastic surgeon. Fortunately, there are many talented, caring plastic surgeons who have the best interests of their patients at heart. You can find one.

Is the Propofol (Diprivan TM) the drug alleged to have caused Michael Jacksons overdose used to provide anesthesia in Dr. Sinclair’s operating room?

Dr. Alexander Sinclair’s operating room is certified by the American Association of Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (commonly known as Quad A, or AAAASF). Propofol (Diprivan Tm) is a sedative/hypnotic used for the induction and maintenance of monitor assisted sedation. Propofol is given intravenously and works within 30 seconds. Wake up is quick usually within a few minutes. It is always given with all necessary supportive equipment. When used properly it is safe and efficacious.

How can I be sure that the anesthesia care I receive in my plastic surgeon’s surgical facility is adequate?

Anesthesia care in an accredited or licensed facility has reached a level of sophistication that is absolutely comparable to the care received in the hospital. For maximum safety, the American Society of Plastic Surgery recommends that:

Any planned anesthesia should be administered by skilled, licensed personnel acting under the direction of an anesthesiologist or the operating surgeon.

Before any type of anesthesia is used, the surgeon or anesthetist must take a full medical history. A physical examination and appropriate lab tests may also be performed. Your surgeon needs to know if you have any serious medical problems or have had previous adverse reaction to any other type of anesthesia. Also, you must let the anesthetist know about any medications you are taking (including herbal supplements), any known drug allergies, when you last ate and whether you smoke cigarettes or use alcohol or illegal drugs.

You should be assured that you will receive individual monitoring by skilled, licensed personnel before, during and after the procedure. Staff who are familiar with the warning signs of cardiac or respiratory distress and are trained in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), should be on hand to monitor your procedure and recovery following your surgery.

If you are told that you will be kept overnight at the surgical facility while you recuperate, make sure that the facility is accredited by a recognized agency. In an accredited facility you will receive around-the-clock care and monitoring by two or more skilled and licensed staff members with at least one trained in ACLS. You will also be assured that the facility has the necessary equipment and medications to handle complications that may arise and an emergency plan in case you need to be transferred to the hospital.

Dr. Alexander Sinclair, his staff and independent associated caretakers follow the recommendations of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
